Waterworks and Irrigation: Unlock W1 and Check the Flow
Check StoneEra Demo W1 access, waterwheel and channel availability, connected flow and the separate water needs of farm plots before rebuilding.
FAQ
Is W1 available in the Demo?
What does Water Finds a Way require?
Is the farm irrigation radius known?
Can you build Waterworks in the free Demo?
Yes, within the explicitly documented W1 scope. The dated 0.9.15.1 announcement says Waterworks W1 unlocks the waterwheel, medium and large norias, and wooden or stone channels in the Demo. Normal worlds must research W1; Creative worlds can use those listed items immediately. The same announcement retains the twelve-technology limit in both modes, so this is not permission to build every advanced water device shown in general game promotion.
This distinction matters when a broad full-game feature description looks more restrictive or more expansive than the Demo. Use the dated, item-specific update together with your current Research panel. The later 0.9.17 guidance still leads players toward researching wooden channels and building a water channel. It does not publish a universal unlock shortcut.
What should you check before replacing a dry channel?
Inspect the stages separately so you can identify where progress stops:
- In Normal, inspect W1 and complete its actual displayed research requirements. Do not substitute a visually similar technology.
- Locate the water source and inspect the proposed route before ordering a large network.
- Confirm the channel pieces have actually been built, not merely previewed or marked as work.
- Follow the connected route from the source and observe whether water reaches the intended section.
- If construction is blocked, use the project’s stated material or access problem before diagnosing the water simulation.
This is a reading and troubleshooting order, not a tested universal channel blueprint. We have not verified a minimum slope, intake depth, pump radius or guaranteed flow rate. Use blocked construction when residents have not yet completed the physical pieces.

Original guide checkpoints: W1, Source, Channel, Flow. Read W1 against your version; the cards are not game UI or a construction formula.
Why can water collect or stop even with connected pieces?
The 0.9.15.1 notes distinguish reopened outlets, which drain shallow floodwater, from closed basins, which retain it. Do not assume all standing water should disappear or that every upstream pool proves a broken channel. The 0.9.16 update also describes adult wild beavers building small dams across suitable shallow rivers: water gathers upstream and flows away again when those logs are removed. Inspect the actual obstruction rather than treating every river as that case.
Natural springs have seasonal behavior under 0.9.15; the notes do not establish infinite supply. If a small route works but a larger design does not, preserve the source, route and version details instead of guessing an undocumented capacity rule.
Does a farm need W1 or a fixed irrigation radius?
The developer’s farming reply says nearby water is needed for crops except pumpkins and mushrooms. It gives no exact radius. That crop requirement is separate from the W1 equipment unlock and cannot be turned into a tile-distance formula.
The 0.9.15 mushroom notes distinguish dry and irrigated yields, so “can grow without water” does not mean water never affects a mushroom harvest. Follow the farming guide for crop-specific conditions, and the seasonal guide when growth pauses in Winter.
What counts as success for Water Finds a Way?
The official 0.9.14 achievement description requires water flowing through at least six connected wooden channel pieces. Six previews or six dry pieces do not establish that condition. Achievements are earned in Normal, not Creative. If the visible condition seems met but no award appears, record the mode, Demo version and connected-flow evidence; 0.9.18 includes achievement-check fixes, not a promise that every old save is equivalent. Check Demo updates before repeating the entire build.
